Sense'07 - Press Release 1 15/10/'07 Announce Campaign START Politics is about more than You - its about what you think We are ...
Maurice Foley will be a candidate for Solomon in this election. He is standing as part of the Sense'07 campaign, which is aimed at making politics meaningful, i.e. directing politics to goals that are appropriate for human development, for Us... See the website 'About the Campaign' http://www.pariahnt.org/maurice-foley/content/view/28/59/ The campaign starts from the assumptions that: Any election in a representative democracy SHOULD be about the temporary resolution of ... 1. Competing views of what we are, and [therefore] competing views of what we want to achieve, of what we think is possible... 2. Then, of competing views on how we think we can achieve what we think is possible - after agreeing what we want to do. Therefore, the Sensible way to approach representative Democracy is to accept that it is much more about trying to represent [and how to properly apply] principles than it is about attempting to represent people as individuals. [ At a deep level, this is at least partly because no one individual can completely represent another, and partly because the existence of any individual [let alone any individual's current personal philosophy] is so brief and so context-dependant that it is long gone before it could be represented... ] And a Sensible candidate should not even try to represent you - the real, separate you, any more than the candidate should try to represent his or her own particular self... Attempting to represent a 'sensible' approach to politics, i.e. to how we manage ourselves, [as I claim to do] requires me to attempt to establish and show the principles and processes I support and to attempt to apply those principles and processes. In other words, this campaign is less about you - or me or any individual - than it is about establishing 'due process' - exactly what the major parties - perhaps all parties - attempt to subvert. This prioritising of 'process' over 'individual' is consistent with a view of Politics that assumes how to 'improve' life as it is experienced by individuals is by increasing the level of civilisation - defined as the instutionalisation of culture in ways which better allow individual development] In conclusion to this first Campaign Release: please consider why Labour chose 'Howard Lite' as its leader ... see http://www.pariahnt.org/maurice-foley/content/view/28/59/ for a better formatted statement of the same things. - Maurice Foley Tue 16/10/07 Sense'07 - Press Release 1 15/10/'07 - AnnounceCampaign End |

A 'Sensible' approach to the World we perceive has to start with acceptance of the limitations to that perception. Since the foundation of individual consciousness is [most likely] no more than semi independent, semi reflexive organic brain processes {see Hofstadter, Dennett, Dawkins - our beautiful consciousness may be no more (or less) than an emergent property arrived at through generations of 'natural selection'...}, no individual can claim to be always 'right', no philosophy can ever provide fool-proof solutions ...
If we accept the unavoidable limitations to our own personal awareness and to our own personal lifetimes, and that the existence of every human is utterly dependant on the continuation of the group from a time before the particular individual came to exist, then we must accept that meaning must relate to more than our own immediate needs, fears, desires etc. In turn, this acceptance means that Action must be guided by Principle and that the bases of the principle ['Values'] - whatever they may be - must include the prioritisation of the sustainability [and development] of the group ...

'Sensible' Values - those that emerge from 'Sensible' political philosophy
To be useful, Politics must be based on Philosophy, where philosophy is taken in a broad sense as "the processes by which we develop Meaning, and construct ['discover'] Truth in terms that are open to all" and where Politics is taken as "the processes by which we organise and govern ourselves and the principles that guide or cause these processes." [See the "Definitions"] In turn, for philosophy to be practically useful, it must be based on our best understanding of what we are, what we want and what we need. The discussions of Good, Right, Civilised society, Values etc. form the basis of a political philosophy which can be expanded endlessly, as our understanding of ourselves deepens… The development of this political philosophy also requires some axioms [ or agreed starting points], some of which are included in the definitions given [see "Definitions" in the left hand menu] |

Sense’07 Philosophy introduction The purpose of the Sense’07 political philosophy is to provide a starting point from which, using rational and consistent processes, we may develop a more detailed philosophy from which we can develop a sensible democracy and national constitution. |

Sense and the Federal Intervention |

The recent and on-going intervention by th Fed. Govt. is an example of how not to do things. It seems designed to fail Aboriginal people, takes no account of them or any of their leaders or organisations. It pays no attention to the original "Little Children Are Sacred" report - although that report is claimed to have been the trigger for the intervention. Perhaps worst of all, it continues in the worst tradition of government ignorance of Indigenous life and philosophy - it learns no lessons from the successes which have been achieved over the years. The removal of the Permit system is inexplicable - apart from in the most arrogant idealogical cultural terms: "they need to see more of us ..." |

About the Sense ’07 Campaign The intention of the Sense ’07 campaign is to contribute positively to current political debate – by drawing attention to the fundamental role of philosophy in politics. The main activities of the campaign are: candidacy in the upcoming Federal Election and the provision of a public platform for discussion of a consciously agreed philosophy we might use [and express in the Constitution] to enhance our democracy.
The philosophy is intended to establish the legitimacy of our jurisdiction on solid (i.e. honest and rational) ‘ground’, from which we can work together through the many challenges we may face – prepared to deal intelligently, rationally and above all, honestly with the issues induced by our own conflicting needs … For those who only think in 'Two Party Preferred' Terms .. Accepting that you only have a choice between Howard and Howard Lite is accepting that you only have a choice between living in a Rat Race or a Chicken Run
The philosophy must establish understanding of ourselves and of the relations between the satisfaction of our own and others’ needs, and those between our own and others’ identities. Any political philosophy must allow for the ‘fact of life’ or ‘reality’ that no man is (or ever could be) an ‘island’, that only open, rational discussion – in shared terms – can be meaningful and therefore useable. Obviously, only honest (in good faith), accessible (meaningful) and assessable (open and applicable) communication can deliver the rational space in which to discuss philosophy. Lies, half-truths, spin, the promotion of ungrounded ideology ... All corrode the public debate, reducing it to an uncivilised screaming of interest groups and a babble of dissatisfied voices. All are tools regularly used by the major parties. Standard Party vElectioneering Procedures [developed by discussion of the ALP, exemplified by Mark Textor and the Liberals] include push-polling and the repetition of half-truths etc. to drag the public debate down to an unEnlightened, stupid competition between amoral figureheads, rather than a civilised discussion of the possibilities actually available to us...
The SenateSense campaign is designed to promote the view of democracy outlined by Peter Singer (in “The President of Good and Evil”, Text, 2004, and elsewhere): “… democratic politics [is] not so much a battle for power, settled by elections, but rather [is] a kind of public conversation about issues of common concern with a decision procedure for reaching temporary closure on those issues when the time for action has come.”
Singer continues that to take part in this public conversation we must seek to justify ourselves to others. Thus we must “acknowledge the fact of political and religious pluralism”, and “show that recognise that we live in a community with diversity”. We do this, Singer explains “by offering reasons that can appeal to all” - i.e. being rational and honest. We establish trust and legitimacy by making “…the issue not one of who may say what, but of what reasons should be given weight.” Singer also reminds us that we use reason all the time in our normal lives and clearly shows that extending it more consistently to the public domain is the only way we can arrive at shared solutions for shared problems. The Sense'07 campaign hopes to contribute to the provision of the type of public discussion space we need to jointly and sensibly decide what we do... _______________________________________________________ disclaimer - pariahnt.org has a policy of hosting progressive local community groups and individuals PARIAH support free speech - but are not afilliated with Maurice Foley - nor neccessarily agree with all of his views Maurice's main site can be found here - www.vote1sense.com cheers mick - PARIAH __________________ |
