Aborigines in protest march 28th January 2008 About 100 Aborigines and their supporters from across Tasmania have marched though Launceston's streets in protest against Australia Day. They have made their way from the Aboriginal Centre in Charles Street to City Park, waving placards and flags. The centre's youth worker Nala Mansell-McKenna says the protesters want to educate the broader community about why Australia day is offensive to aboriginal people. "Our ancestors were murdered, our land was taken off us, we had our culture and language stolen from us, and aboriginal people feel that the day that marks the invasion should be a mourning for for the loss of lives culture and history, rather than a day of celebration," she said. Anti-discrimination commissioner calls parts of intervention racist Posted Fri Jan 25, 2008 The Northern Territory's anti-discrimination commissioner has told a racism forum in Darwin that the quarantining of Indigenous people's welfare payments is a racist act. Tony Fitzgerald says the welfare restrictions introduced by the former coalition government must be scrapped. He told the gathering at Charles Darwin University the only way to eliminate racism is by having laws that respect all of society. "We all live together. We've got to work out ways to get on together. Probably we're not going to love each other but we can still respect each others differences and treat each other with respect. "Racism is inconsistent with all of that." ______________________________________ Quote this article on your site | Views: 1880 | Print | E-mail
