| Sex, vomit, abuse 'fills city streets' (Darwin) NICK CALACOURAS 24Mar08 "He said the system should limit people with alcohol problems from buying alcohol." "This is the price we pay for bowing to the pressures of do-gooders.'' A do-gooder idea coupled with an attack on do-gooders? It only makes sense when you realise Mr Foley is excluding non-Aboriginal people in his proposal to tackle problem drinking - mick |
Mr Foley said council and the Territory Government must work together and re-establish the patrol service on a 24/7 basis "and get these people off the streets''. "The police have more important things to deal with than providing a taxi service to pick up drunks from around Darwin and taking them to drying out shelters, only to find them back on the streets again a few hours later,'' he said. Mr Foley said council needs to find or establish out-of-town "drying out facilities'' to make it harder for people to return to Darwin. But he said making Darwin a "dry city'' was not the answer. "We are talking about a few people here and any consideration of making Darwin dry just smacks of a band-aid approach that paints the whole town as irresponsible,'' Mr Foley said. He said the system should limit people with alcohol problems from buying alcohol. "It is absolutely deplorable that any of us accept the behaviour of these people by having to turn a blind eye,'' he said. Quote this article on your site | Views: 190 | Print | E-mail
