Dear Senator,
RE: URGENT ACTION Family Impact Assessment on NT Intervention Legislation
In the previous election Prime Minister John Howard gave a commitment to a full Family Impact Assessment and Statement for every proposed legislation affecting Australian families. So far a Family Impact Statement has not been tabled for the proposed Northern Territory Emergency Legislation. In keeping with that commitment, and to ensure a realistic and fair assessment of the consequences of this legislation, it is imperative that a full assessment of the impact of this legislation on Aboriginal Australian families in the Northern Territory be conducted and a full Family Impact Statement based on that assessment be submitted for Senate Review before the passage of this legislation through the Senate |
Aboriginal children (Alice Springs) - not a part of Howard's 'Australian' family? |
The Australian people call on the Senate to fulfill its role as a House of Review by - 1 - undertaking a complete and thorough review of this legislation, including the required full Family Impact Assessment;
2 - not undermining the intended fairness and efficiency of our Australian Parliamentary Process by fast tracking this legislation through the required and appropriate Senate review process that every part of the tabled legislation demands; and
3 - delaying the completion of the review and compiling of Senate Review recommendations on this legislation until after September 10th, when Parliament resumes after APEC |
