Subject: Another unnecessary death at One Mile Dam community

Our friend Peter is dead

He hanged himself at OMD, 3 hours ago (2 am now) last person here we thought would.

One Mile Dam community - No alcohol programmes, no medical - educational, refuge facilities. A dumping ground for blacks. In the middle of Darwin!

Not a remote community.

We despise the white indifference that causes these deaths.

Yilli Housing's shameful legal threat against Aboriginal people living in "third world squalor"

Background to censorship attempt

The Kumbutjil Association's reply to this patronising and insulting attempt to intimidate and silence the people of One Mile Dam.

NT Chief Minister Clare Martin has been misled by Housing Minister John Ah Kit regarding the relationship between Yilli Rreung Housing and the Kumbutjil Association

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following program may contain images and voices of deceased persons

One Mile Dam

This episode of Message Stick features a short story from Darwin-based producer Penny Smallacombe called One Mile Dam. In the heart of Darwin's newly developed area of inner city apartment living lies a small Aboriginal community, neglected, and fighting for its rights of ownership. This is the story of another Aboriginal unsung hero, David Timber and his fight for basic human rights.

The community is one mile from the centre of town. It's nestled in amongst huge fuel tanks and newly developed apartment blocks. The houses are made of tin, which do little to protect the residents from the heat of the build-up or the rain and cold of the dry season. (Featured in Sunday Territorian - 29 May, 05)

"To an outsider from the cramped confines of urban England it seemed extraordinary to me initially, that such vast areas of land could not accommodate a few thousand Indigenous people who wish to determine their own lifestyle and resist being squeezed into new and regulated suburban spaces." - Steve Spencer

One Mile Dam mob attend rally for refugees

Some background to the One Mile Dam community

In 1979 - 25 years ago a lease was granted for an aboriginal living area known as One Mile Dam Community or Railway Dam. In the 1970's the old people fought hard and long for their right of place in Darwin. Kumbutjil Association was a name that was used at the time representing the old people that fought for and lived at One Mile Dam.

Residents at One Mile Dam have long family histories of living in this area. 'Kumbutjil' means at the foot of the Black Wattle Tree from 'Mantha Angul' language. Mantha Angul peoples were originally from Anson Bay, Cape Ford and Cape Scott regions.

Kumbutjil Association has been established by the One Mile Dam Community to run their own programs and projects for a safer, active and healthier community. Read more...
