"Minister
for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs,
Senator Amanda Vanstone hit town on Friday afternoon, on her
way to Melville Island to see the departure of the first timber
boat carrying logs from the island from the Commonwealth funded
new timber wharf. I took the Minister direct to Bagot Reserve
from the airport to take a first hand look at housing, community
and management problems there before a quick visit to One
Mile Dam where community leader, David Timber, is keen
to improve conditions for his fellow residents
and campers."
"One
Mile Dam is a little known lease at the foot of the Darwin
central fuel tanks which is about to see the surrounding environment
change as the fuel farm goes and is replaced with up-market
units. Questions now hang over the existing lease, put in
place by CLP Government in the 1980s. My view is that One
Mile has plenty of potential as a venue for cultural activities
and a stopping point for tourist buses and the like. But it
would all depend on community enthusiasm and participation."
